Other research shows that acupuncture can increase the success rate of IVF by almost 50%.

Many gynaecological conditions can contribute to infertility.  I commonly help with PCOS, amenorrhea, endometriosis, fibroids.  Unexplained fertility has become more common and acupuncture can be effective in these cases too.  With all fertility treatment we are working to optimise your menstrual cycle, improve ovarian function and follicular development to ensure good egg quality, and improve the quality and thickness of the endometrium.

With acupuncture we are not just concerned with helping you conceive but also in promoting health and well-being to ensure you carry a healthy baby to term.  Conception is just the first step, the health of your future child begins with the health of you and your partner. 

It is also important to remember that it takes two to make a baby.  Male infertility is a factor in 40-50% of infertility cases.  Research has shown that acupuncture is effective in improving sperm motility, mobility and morphology.

Acupuncture and Assisted Reproductive Therapies

Acupuncture is proving to be truly complementary to the modern western conventional treatments offered for fertility.  Not only has research proved its ability to enhance the effectiveness of assisted reproduction, but it also helps the body to deal with the side effects of the drugs and relieve some of the stress and anxiety which is inevitable with this type of treatment.

Recent research has shown that acupuncture increases the success rates for women having in-vitro fertilization – IVF – by almost 50%.  The studies show that acupuncture improved the success rates of IVF and IUI by reducing stress and increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs.  It also helps prevent cramping in the womb after IVF treatment thereby preventing expulsion of the embryo after IVF, assists implantation of the embryo, and reduces the risk of an ectopic pregnancy.

Ideally I would like to start seeing you a few months prior to you commencing an IVF cycle.   During this time we work on regulating the menstrual cycle, nourishing the uterus, building the lining of the endometrium lining and improving the quality of the eggs.  This ensures you’re body and specifically the reproductive organs are at their optimum for the treatment.  However, if time is of the essence then starting acupuncture treatment as soon as possible will have a positive effect on the outcome of your treatment.  Generally I would want to see you weekly throughout the IVF process and then before and after egg collection and embryo transer.  Treatment is then continued weekly for a while to maintain the integrity of the pregnancy.
